Sports Massage (performance)
Sports or Performance Massage is a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries. Sports massage has three basic forms: pre-event massage, post-event massage, and maintenance massage.
Pre-Event
Typically a 10-30 minutes long and generally happens the day of and prior to the event. The focus is on preparation for high-intensity activity not to correct dysfunction or reduce stress. Therapists will use compression, kneading, ROM & active stretching, vibration and tapotement–all performed at an “up-tempo” pace. Remember, the goal is get the athlete AMPED UP.
Maintenance
Treatments are implemented during the training program. It’s typically 60-90 minutes focused on paying attention to rehabilitation and/or chronic issues, like that frozen shoulder or crazy sore calves. It’s an opportunity to deal with both biomechanical issues and overload (or training errors). This is where deep-tissue & targeted Swedish massage, stretches, friction and trigger point work are appropriate.
Post-Event
Treatments normally are performed after the event, usually within 72 hours. It’s focused on recovery, increasing circulation, reducing muscle tension and overall calming the athlete. Therapists use effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), broadening compression, joint mobilization, and assisted stretching. No deep tissue work, muscles need to recover more before that happens. Sessions are usually 30-45 minutes plus assessment & aftercare counseling.

Medical Massage
Physician Directed Treatments
Medical massage is a type of therapeutic massage that uses specific techniques to address certain medical conditions. It can be used to relieve pain, improve circulation, and help the body heal from injuries. Massage therapists who specialize in medical massage have additional training in anatomy and physiology so that they can better understand how to work with medical doctors in treating specific conditions to achieve the desired improvements.
Medical massage is often used to treat chronic pain, injuries, and conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and fibromyalgia. It can also be used to improve circulation and help the body heal from surgery or other medical procedures. Many people find that medical massage is a helpful complement to traditional medical care.
